I use gas in the MIG, and only go through 1 or 2 small spools of wire a year. I would really like to get something like your describibg to wear all the time in the shop while metal working. Whenever I switch from Plasma cutting or grinding to welding mode, I have to strip off respirator, goggles, ear protection to get my helmet on for a 2 or 3 second spot weld. sounds like the setup you have is the way to go!
