I am a big proponent of locking diffs. But I agree completely, if driving a locker equipped vehicle on an icy road 4WD should be used. My M37 has lockers in both diffs. There's a bit of pull to the left with throttle but with power steering steering is reasonable and traction of course immense. I do use the vehicle on icy winter roads and I do use 4WD when necessary to ensure the rear end doesn't slide out on ice.
