Each forum message that you read is a separate web page to the computer. Pages that you have already read are kept in a "cache" folder so that if you go back to them soon they won't have to be re-loaded over the internet. Links to pages that are already in your cache are displayed in a different color. That's how you can see which message in the forum you've already read. After a while the least-recently-accessed pages are deleted from the cache. Kind of round-about but that's how it works. I don't think there's any one file that lists which pages you've visited, so to copy this information from one computer to another, you have to copy the whole cache folder.
I use Netscape and it keeps my cache files at C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\davids\Cache.
Yours would replace "davids" by whatever username you have netscape set up for. I don't know where microsoft IE keeps the cache, but it should be similar.
When I change computers I copy my bookmarks from the old one, but the rest of the stuff is too much of a hassle for me.
