Hi Vaughn. I was going to wait a bit more to continue testing out the trany but since you asked, it's much quieter. I first tried an 85W 140 which was much better than the 80W 90 that I first had in the trany. But with the 85W 140 it was harder to shift the non-syncro trany due to the difference in viscosity between hot and cold. Seems rather counter-intuitive to me, I would expect less of a viscosity change, but when cold I had to shift REALLY fast or I would miss the sweet spot where the gears will mesh. I then realized that I had neglected to get GL-4 85W 140 and had instead purchased a GL-5. So I again switched out the oil, this time to a GL-4, GL-5 75W-140 that specifically states that it is safe for yellow metals. I really like this oil; it has greatly quieted the trany, is relatively easy to shift, and even when I miss a shift and grind the gears a bit (I’m still learning) the grind isn’t nearly as bad as the 80W-90. I do still plan on taking off the top to check for bent forks sometime this winter as I think I can hear a bit of sliding noise.
