With no factual basis, my theory for why the spare was mounted on the 3/4-ton WC-series of Command Cars had the "official" reason and the "real" reason. The "official" reason was to tell the driver that the tire was there to provide him additional protection in a combat zone. The "real" reason was to keep the driver from baling out at the first sign of trouble, leaving an officer in the backseat to fend for himself. Again, no factual basis, just the cynical opinion of several WWII veterans I had met over the years at MV shows.
