I live in the top north part of Idaho. Winters can get pretty cold. I use 85-140 in my '46 WDX and I can really notice it's harder shifting in the winter. I would probably change to lighter weight but I guess it doesn't bother me enough to do it. I drive my F350 with a snow plow on it in the winter more than the PW.
As for cutting down the noise, I don't think it made much difference. But, I can't hear anyway. :) :)
