I think there will be a fair number of people who will realize the immense amount of torque an electric motor can put out, right off the line, and will decide to go that route to win races or win bets against their buddies. I have co-workers who are combustion engine fans but they are also installing electric motors in some project cars.
I was riding in a different coworker's Tesla last week and he gave fair warning to put my head back against the headrest, and then he stomped on the pedal. Man....did that car ever set me back in my seat. It was truly impressive, and it was not one of the higher-end models, and didn't even have the performance option for his model, which he said is supposed to offer even more acceleration. Some Tesla models offer 0 - 60mph acceleration of about 2.5 seconds.
