If you talk with an old timer that was a painter they let you know the old enamel paint was a 'live paint' and the mineral oils rejuvenate the paint "bring it back to life" it becomes more elastic and back to its original state.
The new paints are more of a epoxy that are hard and rigid (more durable but not as forgiving)
Sealing it with new style paint will protect your truck from further loss of paint and rust,. But if there is some original paint that has chalked or begun to loose bonding with the metal most painters will want to sand it down, removing some of the patina charm you are wanting to keep.
Hope you get other opinions and do what you feel is the best for your wants/needs.
