The difference in their names is purely geographic. In the North Atlantic and Northeast Pacific oceans, the term 'hurricane' is used, whereas in the Northwest Pacific Ocean they are called 'typhoons,' known as cyclones when they form over the South Pacific and Indian Ocean.
