Very often a coil will work when cold and fail when hot, then work when they cool down.And once they warm up again they fail again. But when they fail there is NO spark. At least that is my experience. Never had one that would fail as you describe.
Condensers on the other hand I have had fail in that manner, they seem to create misses when hot.
How is the smoke up your way?
