Door latch mechanism help. 1/2 ton WC Closed Cab

How do I get door latch mechanism back through the hole on the edge of the of the door on my 1/2 ton Military closed cab. Mine had a busted spring on the latch mech. so it was easy to remove from the opening. Now the latch on the new mech is spring tight and won�t fit through the hole and let me secure it with the 4 screws.
