Many Thanks to you all,
After reading through all the responses and many from past history in the forum, I’ve decided to go with the 4.89 to 1 gearing in the differentials. I am quite certain that this will give me the power I need while increasing the cruising speed and fuel mileage. If I wasn’t planning on pulling loads I might consider the 4.3 ratio, but the higher cruising speed attainable with that ratio might be negated by the white knuckle condition from driving a Power Wagon (even one that has been entirely rebuilt) at over 65 mph. :)
Some further comments:
Many thanks to Frank Irons who had several comments on this subject back in the early 2000’s.
Yes, any trailer that I own will have brakes; I have learned the value of trailer brakes through trial and error. :)
I’m planning on staying away from disk brakes on the beast. I believe that the standard brakes will be sufficient after they are worn in and go through final adjustment. If they are still a bit lacking, I expect to go with a vacuum assist (I have 3 on the shelf).
