My '62 WM300 with factory filler neck and tank is the same. Usually I can get the lock to click on the first notch, but not always, and I always have to hold the nozzle by hand. Sometimes aiming the gas stream a bit to the left or right of the filler neck helps, sometimes to the top or bottom. Sometimes nothing helps and I have to meter the gas by hand. It's all part of the mystique of owning a Power Wagon
