when i bought my 52 back in the eighties, it too was a slow filler, i removed the filler assy and found the vent tube was gone just about the end of the fill pipe, it either rusted and broke off or broke from shock, the piece was rolling around in the tank! anyway, i bought a good used one from vpw and the vent tube is approx 4-5" longer than the inside end of the filler tube so it vents past the rubber connector and actually enters the tank, it has been working for 40 plus years now and it will fill fine on the first notch of most dispensers...
