If you don't want to undo the whole temp gage and sending unit assembly, then just unscrew the bulb from the head and dip it into a pan of just-boiled water (taken right off the stove and walked quickly over to the truck) and see what the gage says.
Just be very careful not to let the tube that connects to the bulb get twisted while you're unscrewing the nut that holds it to the head, or you'll twist the bulb right off the tube. Trust me, I know. I was lucky to find a local replacement when I did that.
