I would agree with Hank. If you are not burning fuses, tripping circuit breakers, or burning fusible links, then the logical place would be the coil as interrupting the coils ground with a hidden switch is a great anti theft device.

Have you tried turning on the the lights first and then trying to start the engine? If not get a helper and check the ground from the coil while trying to start the truck and see if it exists.

Another thing that just crossed my mind. This sounds odd, but it could also be a bad condenser. They do all kinds of weird things when they go bad.
