That's a good question, and I have pondered the same many times. Every once in a while one of the easiest solutions actually does the trick. If the proposed solution is actually a possibility, it's worth giving it a shot.
As an example: the truck won't start. Checking for loose or dirty connections is pretty easy, and usually works.
