ok, that adjustment is to provide clearance between the pinion housing and pinion (gear), not to adjust the gap of the pedal rod clearance.

With the lever pressed all the way down, check clearance between the housing where the bronze bushing is and the end of the gear closest to the housing, s/b 1/16 to 3/32. Just turn the contact button right or left to adjust, no need to press it down.

If you need to take up clearance on the rod, you might need to weld a nut or washers to close the gap between the rod end and button on the switch. If you adjust the button to take up clearance on the rod, the pinion gear will be too far from the ring gear or too close and will cause grinding.

These trucks sometimes got different parts installed to accommodate wrong parts and that may be why the clearance is too great. You can always try a switch with longer button shaft, but then the holes for mounting may be off.
