MU2 winches are rated at 10,000#, but obviously capable of much more. They have a sheer pin that is supposed to give before the more expensive things start breaking. Sometimes these get replaced with hardened material which is a bad idea.
How much they will pull sometimes depends on how much abuse the winch has seen in it's life. If someone uses the winch to jerk something free, the bronze gear will suffer and eventually break.
I saw a Jeep with an 8000# winch pull a loaded concrete truck from the mud several years ago.
And I have broken 7/16" cable, straightened hooks and broken 7/16" chain.
