Dana, the only reason to pay back taxes is if you show them you bought it in 1972, I've had situations like that and I just ripped up that bill of sale and had another one with a much more recent date.
The law in Mass is you are supposed to pay the sales tax within 30 days?? Of purchase,
That is the reason most people want the date left off if titles/bill of sales
