Strength, 741 least to 489 strongest due to bigger pinion bearings. I don't know if a 489 will take a PW differential case, or the ring and pinion gears, and if it did, you still have other items to consider:

- Distance between the machined mounting ring of the carrier to the center point of the axle. You may have the have the carrier machined, or you might be able to use gaskets:

- Do the mounting holes match up?

- Are the PW ring & pinion of the same size to allow them to be installed in a car 741/742/489 carrier.

As many years as I've been on this forum, I don't recall anyone breaking the carrier/case of a PW even with V8's installed, so there hasn't been a reason for us to look elsewhere for stronger carriers/cases. Parts are still fairly easy to get and gear ratios range from 5.83 to 4.30 so there is a ratio to match intended use of the vehicle. The powertrax 1210 locker may be a little difficult to find, and at time an ARB locker is offered on the forum, so unless you really feel the need for some reason to go with a car third member, you have good choices for the PW.
