Chain drive was used on big trucks up to the "Dragon Wagon" M26A1 prime mover. The chains were external and easily observable. The reason I'm so down on chain drive in my own personal transfer cases is that they stretch and eventually quickly wear out the case from inside out. You can't see it happening and they aren't as easy to work on as the cast iron, reliable transfer cases we all love so much like the NP200 and 205.
By 1940, the early part of the modern era when the trucks we love were designed, things were geared for gears, I guess.
