…I had the opportunity to work on Soviet equipment while I was in the USAF. We bought an entire lab and test stand from, the then, Soviet Union for testing in the US. All of their test equipment looked VERY similar to test equipment that was built in the US in the 50’s and 60’s. While talking to one of the Soviet instrument techs, he showed me the official ‘State’ instrumentation manual from the ‘Moscow Institute of Instrumentation’.

EVERY piece of instrumentation built by the ‘State’ was covered. This manual included all the calibration standards and schematics for each piece of equipment. I giggled when I saw that beside each official ‘State’ model number there was a line that read “Reference Honeywell, USA” or “Reference Gould, USA” or “Reference Tektronix, USA”. 99% of the equipment listed was a direct knock off of our stuff. The other 1% was a close cousin.

He didn’t seem to find the same humor in it that I did….
