A "poor man's 340" would basically be a 318 bored .060 over (327 cubies, 13 shy of a 340), running a 67 forged steel 318 crank, the later heavy 318 rods (74 on), and the big port, big valve 360 heads and a suitable intake and hot cam. All balanced, of course.

The last bare rebuildable 340 block, crank, rods and heads I saw had an asking price of $1200. I know there are exceptions out there, but 340 parts on the average aren't cheap. You can piece together the components for a "poor man's 340" a lot cheaper than that. IMHO, though, a balanced 360 would be a wiser investment.
