You're right about low gearing Jerry, it's a wash. High gearing is the issue and reason owners repower to V8s. Acceleration, hills, road speeds, pulling trailers, are all factors in deciding to repower. The flathead is a good engine and has it's place. Going back, he'll need to determine if his truck has the original engine mounts, he'll probably have to switch back from an automatic or syncro trans to a spur gear or find an M37 trans, he may not be aware of what it will take to go back if he is looking for an original truck.
