I had a set screw come loose some years back. I just happened to find it when I opened up the Transfer Case to check something else. The keeper wire was in pieces and the screw was loose but still locating the shift fork where it was supposed to be on the rail. But I was literally days or hours away from the screw falling out, probably causing all kinds of carnage, and the gear moving.
I was actually thinking it may be possible to assemble the entire assembled sets of gears from side to side. That is, the input and brake drum output set from the driver side to the front and rear output location on the passenger side, and visa versa. But I have no reason to try and find out.
