When you work on the transmission always use the transmission case number to determine which transmission you have. When Marcel and I pulled his 53 M37 engine to have it rebuilt, we looked at the transmission cover to see which transmission he has. The cover case number was 88761 dated 53, so we thought it was the early transmission that would be correct for the truck. We ordered a new top from John at MWM and prepped Marcel's truck for the new top. After the top arrived, we pulled the transmission's current top only to find it had NP420 shift forks and other parts - Darn, we were surprised, never expected the early cover to have later parts installed. So we checked the transmission case, yep an NP420. Lesson learned, on an M37 always check the case number, can't assume anything.
