I've been stripping the asphalt undercoating material from a '63FF w mild heat from a heat gun. The coating appears completely intact w/o any cracks where water can enter. Once removed the fenders appear perfect but the louvered inner fenders are different. The paint there is coming off in thousands of 1/8" spots and each one appears to be the start of a rust pit. Perhaps the steel had not been prepared properly prior to painting it or the coating leaked. Now I'm wondering if there will be problems under the rest of the coating and should it all be removed? Does anyone else have experience with failed undercoating?
