If you want something stout, you make it out of cast iron. There are winch mitts that are a flat piece of leather w/glove so the cable frays don't spear your hand/fingers and hook you up. When winching it is good to throw on some blankets on the cable so if the cable breaks, it minimizes the possibility of damaging the truck or injuring you when the cable whips. After using the winch, I stand twenty feet from the drum when winding in the cable in case I do get hung, I have time to free myself. Don't wear loose clothing when working the winch and let the engine idle when winding in the cable after use, stop the winch 10 feet from the drum, turn off the engine and manually wind in the remaining cable. Don't be afraid of the winch, just be smart when operating it.
