i have seen some European theater, ww2 pics with tools inside the gate on carryall and on WC51/52. maybe have been done to prevent theft from locals?
One story of why the command cars went from leather to canvas seats is the Italians would steal it at night to make shoes. at least it went to good use. ;/)
