My 49 came with a Washington title with the engine number as the VIN. Problem was the original engine was long gone. I had the seller prepare a bill of sale that listed both the VIN and the serial number on the cab and frame. I also got a build card for it from Chrysler that listed the original engine number and the serial number on the cab/frame, so I had some proof those numbers went together.
Had to take the truck down to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to verify the VIN. I was a bit nervous, but explained the situation to the inspecting officer. He spent about 10 seconds checking the frame and cab numbers, signed it off, then spent the next 30 minutes talking to me about the truck. In fact I had several other officers come out go check it out as well. So basically I had pretty good luck in Cali too.
