Now days not many kids grow up working on cars or mechanical things, so a good understanding of how things work is simply not there, compounded by the level of one's ability to read and comprehend. The complexity of vehicles has significantly upped the level of difficulty even with computers.

Businesses have always looked for ways to get more production and money out of departments and a service department is no exception, so when a consultant drops in or is hired, and can make an articulate sound pitch for higher profits, owners usually jump on board. I've seen dealers go from piece work in service departments with good problem correction and fast service, to an hourly wage where service slowed down to long service time, rebellion from techs. There are good dealers with good service techs, it's just finding them, and no one should feel a loyalty to the dealer from which the vehicle was purchased. If they can't fix the problems, find another dealer who can, or go elsewhere. Vehicle are too darn expensive to live with the problem.
