I use Google maps as a reference guide. I will often have my wife check traffic as we are driving so I can decide which route to take. The main problem with Google is the routes it selects. It has tried to put me on side roads when the main highway is wide open.

Google travel times are a farce. Yes I know the work with distance and current traffic speeds. No allowance for stops, just straight driving. My biggest gripe is there is no way to specify vehicle type. There is no way Google accounts for or allows you to set size or weight in route or time calculations. No way I can come close with my truck and 5th wheel. Route selection is critical for large vehicles. I often see travel times that require vehicle speeds well above the speed limit even in mountain routes.

Google maps is like your backup camera, it’s only one tool in your tool bag.

Don’t get me started on the stupid people I see backing up and never turn their heads to look to the sides or rear. They only use the stupid camera that has a limited view. And don’t talk to me about backup sensors that pick up uneven pavement or bushes on the side.

Turn your head and use your eyes and ears along with the cameras and sensors they are all tools in your bag.
