Out here in California, there have been many "Earth Friendly" programs like this. The last few were sponsered by a local refinery (Mobil I think). They say bring in your currently registered car over 15 years old and they will give you $500. The cars are then sent to the crusher and everyones happy. The refinery is happy because it gets some good PR and a tax writeoff. The people are happy to get $500 to make their first payment on a newer car. Many tons of good parts are crushed, so the junk yards are happy because they can charge more for parts because they all just got more rare. The new car dealers are happy because everyones car shopping to replace their crushed car. The State is happy because they can get more money in new car sales taxes and registrations.
Happy happy happy. How come I'm not happy?
