It is a shame I do not have a scanner or know how to add attachments to e-mails so,
Just reading from "The automobile engine" without accompaning pics and diagrams, I will add this to your statements on the matter.
The automobile engine, copyright 1961 by
william weinstein, 1st edition, published by
chilton company.
Section 8: engine lubrication, pg.301,oil filter systems. There are two classifications of oil filtering systems: the by-pass system and the full-flow system.
The by-pass filter does only a part-time job. A study of figure 232 will help you see that all the oil does not pass through this filter. Oil being pumped directly to the engine is not being filtered. It is possible for the same contaminants-dust,dirt,metallic fillings, carbon, and moisture-to be continually circulated in such an oil system without ever being filtered out. This system, however, will not interfere with the circulation of oil to the engine. The engine will recieve oil regardless of the clogged condition of the filter.
The full-flow filtering system (fig.233)filters all the oil before it circulates through the engine. It positively removes all but the finest contaminants. Bearing life is prolonged, providing the oil filter and the by-pass valve function properly. A clogged filter will build up oil pressure, open the by-pass valve, and thus assure engine lubrication. END
The by-pass system has a pressure relief valve in case of a clogged filter, and the full-flow system has a by-pass valve at the filter in case of a clogged filter. In case of a clogged full-flow filter, where oil volume and pressure drop, this system reverts to a by-pass type system allowing adequite oil to the bearings but unfiltered.
