A few weeks ago, my computer was becomming more and more unresponsive and weird. Despite weekly updates from Norton which told me I was fine, I became more and more convinced that it was an undetected virus. I had security maxed out and daily scans revealed nothing. I could not even reload the windows 98 operating system. I decided to gamble and did the upgrade to Windows XP operating system. It took all day but appeared to solve most of my problems. Only thing was, Norton no longer worked. I found out that I had to go out and buy the latest version of Norton and kiss my old service contract with Norton goodbye. It took me one week to find, buy, and install the latest version of Norton. In the first running of Norton, it reported six files were permanantly damaged due to infection from two separate virus's. I ended up reloading windows xp a second time to replace the damaged files. All is well now (I think) and so far, I really like XP.
Lessons Learned
1. You can't depend on your virus protection vendor to roll your current paid subscription over to support a newer operating system.
2. Anytime you upgrade, the first program up and on the air should be your anti-virus.
3. Even if your virus software says its clean, its not 100 percent perfect.
4. Weekly downloads of virus updates are not often enough.
Best Wishes
Lonnie
