Mystery starting problem.

This is probably a pretty simplistic problem for the folks here, but given as I'm mystified, I'll post it anyway.

Back in October I took my 62 W300 up into the hills. It had been on several trips this Fall, and functioned flawlessly in all of them. Then, on this occasion, one evening it suddenly didn't want to start, although after it rolled a little downhill backwords it started right up.

The next day, however, it wouldn't start for anything. I had to have somebody tow me downhill (quite a feat, given as where I was) whereupon it started up by putting it in gear and turning the ingnition on. This was a last resort, after I tinkered with everything to try to get it started, even switching out another battery I happened to have a long for my 12 volt electric fence.

I drove it home and parked it. After testing it a couple of times, it wouldn't do a darn thing.

Yesterday I went out to work on it. I popped open the hood and found the postive cable off the batter (I have no idea when that happened, but it couldn't be the source of the original problem, given the batteries having been swapped out, etc.) Anyhow, after hooking the cable back up, the truck started right up. It started find several additonal times as I drove it around on errands.

What's the deal here?
