The only way to center the steering gear is to turn the steering wheel all the way to either the right or left untill it stops, then count the number of turns to the opposite side until it stops. Then turn back half the number of turns. That will center the steering. You should do this with the steering arm (pitman arm) off. The steering wheel on the worm shaft has only one position. Once you have centered it, take the cap off the right side of the steering box. There will be a screew with a lock on it. Remove the lock and turn the screw clock wise untill it stops. Then back off 1/8 turn. This adjusts the worm/steering gear. Replace the lock and cap. Then turn your steering wheel to both right and left end points to make sure no binding occurs. Trucks that have been in wrecks sometimes get there worm teeth bent. You can till when you start turning the wheel off the center point and if you feel a heavy drag. If this happens you have to readjust off the center point to compensate. Center your wheel again, point the tires straight forward position and reattach the steering arm. Your now centered. You should also look at the steering arm to ensure it is not bent. Steering arm ball should be parrellel with steering gear hole and arm should be straight, if not replace. Take the cap off the top of the steering box and top off with S.A.E 90 W oil. Now is a good time to check your drag link cups for wear and replace you dust covers if necessary. Sorry for the long post, but take your time and get your steering in good shape.
