Took a bit, but I figured out my alternator issue. I am using some military application battery cables that are around 10 feet long, bound in a shrink tube and labeled on each end. I have used 2 other sets in other projects. Never really occurred to me that this one might just have been to link 2 banks in a multi-bank 24v system. Yup, labeled positive on one end of the wire and negative on the other. Nothing in the truck that was working (lights, window motors, starter etc.) cared which end the electrons were coming from till I got to the alternator. All I can do is laugh at myself for not verifying.
