If you don't use the correct thickness, it will lower your gas filling tube and you'll have to fill at a slower rate. Also any load in the bed will press down on the rear fender rear brackets causing them to deform. My bed has 1/8 thick tank steel plate supported by 5/8 thick wood which sets filler in upwards position and matches the rear fender bracket level for 3/4 thick wood. This is on a C3, but should work for any of the FFPW's.
