They discharge a blast of juice to the coil when the points open. A transfer of tungsten from one 'point' to the other is caused by the condenser not matching the coil. One side or the other is to much or too low micro-farad rating. But don't ask me which side is hi/lo.
The modern junk is from China, they are in all consumer electronics. Car control boards too. They go bad in a couple years, so you buy a new PC,monitor,etc. Or you could replace the $1 capacitor. Google/Wiki <capacitor plague>
