After doing some additional research, I found in manual TM 9-2320-212-20 dated November 1973 for the M37 Series Trucks, the following section that states in part.
“Section XVIII. TRANSMISSION AND POWER-TAKEOFF
Z-101. General
a.The transmission is a helical gear, synchroshift unit, with four forward speeds and one reverse. On vehicle equipped with a winch, the power-takeoff is mounted at the left side of the transmission.
6.Transmission assembly (model 4201 complete with cover assembly is installed in current production M37B1, M43B1, and M201Bl vehicles. This transmission assembly is interchangeable with transmission assembly (model 88950) which was used in the M37, M43, and M201 vehicles.

It has been a learning experience for me to gain additional knowledge on the M37 series transmissions. I would have never thought the M37B1 series Model 4201 (NP420) would have different mounting ears than the FFPW NP420, but here it is. I guess the number 93511 must be used to identify a transmission’s components and not the model of the transmission, at least for the Military, Models 88950 and 4201 must be Military designated numbers only and may make a difference when ordering parts from a Military Supplier, they do not show up in any of the transmission gear catalogs, but the NP420 does. So, if you are looking to replace your spur gear in either a WC or early FFPW, the best M37 model to get would be the 4201 since its component parts were more widely used in both Military and Civilian environments, and therefore parts should be more readily available. I will add the three transmissions to the PIF illustrating which individual parts interchange along with the aftermarket part numbers so if anyone needs to located parts, if Dave C., or MWM or VPW cannot supply them, it will make it much easier locating parts from a transmission gear supplier. It has been a good discussion and I appreciate everyone’s input and now we all know the differences of these transmissions. Have a great day everyone!!
