Yes, the early Model 88950 M37 transmission will interchange with the PW Spur Gear, but it will not interchange with an engine with a clutch cover (bell housing) for an NP420. The PTO provided to you was from an NP420. Here is the comparison of parts:

Model 88950
Shaft, Input w/Integral Gear (17T, 9-9/16 long, 1”-10 splines)

NP420
Shaft, Input w/Integral Gear (Drive Gear) (17T, 9-21/32” long, 1”-10 splines)

Model 88950
Shaft, Main (13-25/32” long)

NP420
Shaft, Main (13-1/16” long)

Model 88950
Counter shaft (43-36-27-17T)

NP420
Counter shaft, w/Gears, Integral
(43-36-22-14T)

Now I am not questioning anyone’s knowledge, I am only providing information I have found using aftermarket transmission gear catalogs. Dave C. as well as MWM, VPW are more knowledgeable. In looking at the parts lengths above, one would not think they directly interchange between housings.
