The saw in that log picture does have an aftermarket cylinder and piston that are both been modified for horsepower and performance. The degree wheel is used to set where the ports will open and close by laying out how much can be removed. I am by no means an expert, just a guy who likes small engines, making noise, and can't leave anything alone.
I would hop up a toaster if there was horsepower to be gained...
