When you consider the GVW of a vehicle; vehicle weight + payload, the vehicle's springs are calculated to carry both. Softness or hardness of a spring is referred to as its rate. The rate of a spring is the weight required to deflect it 1 inch. The M37 has 7 in front, 11 in the rear, the PW on the other hand, has 7 in front and up to 14 in the rear. Speed is considered, so is off-road on rough terrain. Since leaf springs perform well in rough terrain, the M37 can carry 1.5 tons off-road and the PW 2 tons off road. Anyone that feels the PW can't carry 2 tons simply has to look at the GVW of the body tag and compare it to the actual vehicle weight, subtract the two. Example, if your truck has a GVW of 9500 pounds and the truck weighs 5500 pounds, you can carry 4000 pounds. PIF has spring information in Group 16.
