The M37 tranny top just has the shifter stub shaft projecting about 3" above the top.
A separate shift handle is bolted to it.
The civilian had the complete shifter shaft integral in the assembly, just like the earlier crashbox.
I've seen civilian trucks with the M37 version installed, sometimes a replacement or retrofit. I think the military ones are more numerous.
