Since we are all appear to be experts on installing bearings, and some of you shy away from a little bearing shock, how many of you have properly rebuilt your transfer cases following the correct procedure for installing new cups/cones in the intermediate gear and sub-assemblies. What does the manual state you have to do – SHOCK the bearings! How do you shock the bearings – with a HAMMER! Hopefully, you used a brass hammer to do it. But it means a direct hit on the bearings, not a tap, but a good blow. You do this to fully seat the cups because pressing them in alone does not do it. Now some of you think it is horrible to use a hammer and a block of wood to drive on a hub on the knuckle? The process hardly creates the same force as a direct hit.

Cones can get a little cock eyed starting on the knuckle, wedge themselves and need a little knock to align them or they fit a little snug. You only need to drive the enough to get the inner nut on and it will do the rest. For those of you that feel it is a sin to shock bearings, I have attached the repair manual for the TC for your reference. Hopefully you'll feel a little more comfortable if you need to do it.
