Because the inner cones of some of these bearings are slightly tight and you're not able to just push the hub on with your hands. If you can't do that, then you have to drive it on applying the 2 x4 at the end of the hub and striking it with a hammer, it doesn't take much, and it doesn't hurt the inside bearings. You can't stick your axle housing under a press to press the hub on the knuckle. I've had to install a couple hubs on the knuckle this way. They are correct bearing numbers, but depending on where they are manufactured, slightly different inside clearance.

It's just like clothes, you can buy a pair of the same style pants for your size that are made in one country and they fit fine, if they are made in another country, they can be slightly smaller at the same size, it's crazy.
