not necessarily better than old oil. Back in the day they uses lead in gear oils which works really well in tranny and rear ends. they stopped for environmental reasons and went to Sulphur and phosphorous. They also used whale oil in some factory differentials. eg my early 60s Buicks ran whale oil. much thinner than gear oil and all you had to do was drain it, filter it and put it back in. But the world got low on whales so that had to stop. ;/)
