Well there’s marks on the pulley for timing & so there’s only 2 options for TDC. So if there’s no visible marks on the pulley, that would be the first thing I’d fix. So once you find the “0” on your pulley, now it’s just a matter of finding the compression stroke. So if you pull the plug & put your finger over when cranking...usually #1 TDC becomes pretty obvious & then just turn the engine by hand to line up the 0 degrees.
If you haven’t done already, find the TDC mark on the pulley & mark it with chalk. Then do as suggested & you’ll find it if the engine has compression.
